The electric coop for years answered to no one. They spent foolishly, never consulting with members, and members never questioning the board. Now they want a huge price increase, the members can't afford this. And it's just the beginning of a series of increases according to the co-op president. Why do we need an office manager, when there are 2 women running the office just fine. Our president wants to pay an office manager $100,000.00 a year, and he wants to hire a lineman to the tune of 90,000.00 a year. Where does it end. They are hiring out to have poles installed, why don't you use the truck you bought a few years ago. They claim they need all this money to pay for updating the grid, training and other stuff. What did you do with the 800,000.00 That was borrowed for that reason. That office needs a complete overhaul and board members held accountable. When I was a kid I was afraid of the dark, now as an adult I'm afraid of the electric bill.

I wish to express support for the requested rate increase pertaining to the Swan's Island Electric Cooperative. The Board has recognized deficiencies in prior year's operations with respect to equipment, safety, training and deferred grid maintenance. The Board has developed a work program to address these deficiencies and borrowed funds to implement corrective action. Indeed the plan has been being implemented for the past two years and will require an additional two years to complete. However, the Board has not requested a rate increase since 2007 and the cost of improving service and safety plus interest on new borrowings caused the Cooperative to fail its' TIER test in 2013. The Board recognizes that to meet loan requirements it must pass the TIER test in both 2014 and 2015. In order to do so it needs the rate increase it has requested. I feel that those who signed the Petition are not fully aware of many of the facts I have described above. The rate increase of 14.45% is necessary and appropriate.
