PUC Commissioners: I strenuously object to the PUC's authorizing construction of new fracked gas pipeline which the PUC staff has deemed unnecessary and of no benefit to ratepayers. In fact as we know, you have decided it is OK to make ratepayers pay for this construction they neither need nor want, a position unacceptable to neighboring, participating states. The bottom line for those among us who are willing to acknowledge the rising threat of climate change, is that this gas and any new infrastructure to accommodate it must be abandoned altogether in favor of renewable energy and it infrastructure. Recent science shows that methane emissions from fracked gas are a far greater threat to our climate than previously acknowledged. Fracked gas is not a transition fuel. It is dangerous to our future. Please, PUC commissioners, do your homework and do the right thing.

I stand with Maine Students for Climate Justice as they call on the PUC to reject new fossil fuel infrastructure and implement bold renewable energy policies. Please see the attached document.

To whom it may concern: Thank you for the opportunity to submit comments on this matter of critical importance for Maine?s economy. In my work in media and communications, I get to talk with Mainers from all walks of life, including the leaders of our state?s business community. One of the most consistent themes I hear is that Maine is not a place where people can easily do business ? that we?re somehow resistant as a state to economic success. A big part of this is the cost of energy in our state. While the rest of the country has access to the big new reserves of clean, domestic natural gas that have been discovered, we here in the Pine Tree State and in New England more generally haven?t gotten access to that newly available fuel. Because we can?t get as much gas as we would like, our businesses and residents are stuck with higher gas prices and higher electric prices than the rest of the country. Not just a little bit higher for a few days, but five or six times higher for the entire winter. I?m proud of my state and the hardworking people who live here. The fact that, in addition to numerous other challenges, we have to try to attract businesses with a disadvantage like energy costs is frustrating for me and for anyone who learns about this issue. The good news is that the Legislature had the good sense to empower you at the PUC to take action on this problem. It seems crystal clear to me that New England needs access to the natural gas being developed in Pennsylvania ? only a few hundred miles from our population centers. Of the projects before you, the Tennessee Gas project appears to be the only one that will directly achieve this goal. With this opportunity before you, approved by the Legislature, I want to strongly encourage you to embrace Tennessee Gas Pipeline?s Northeast Energy Direct project so that it can get started saving us hundreds of millions of dollars before it?s too late for our businesses.
