In the 1990's I went on active duty. While away my son had the phone number 207-623-1487 disconnected. To this day (Aug 17, 21) the message heard when that number is dialed is - the number "has been disconnected or is no longer in service". When I returned from active duty in 2006 I tried to get the number back & was told it was not available I get 12 to 20 calls a day asking for money, robo calls, & for other reason. Often it is a 207 number & in one case it was my own current number of 623-0395. Most frequently the caller id is "unavailable" or a string of the same numbers as the phone number portion of the caller id phone number or gives the name of the town & state). - Often I called the number back & received the message that that number "has been disconnected or is no longer in service...". Two examples 207-695-2418 & 207-707-5371. - Often I called the number back & received the message "...cannot be completed as dialed..." An example 207-643-1312. - I have received calls from numbers & called back to find NO ONE at that number tried to call my number for any reason. Sometimes this was private numbers & on one occasion it was an office within the State of Maine Government system. 3. I do not answer calls if I do not recognize the name or number on the caller ID. That does not mean I do not make 12 to 20 trips to the ringing phone a day & let the calls go to voice mail. This is especially upsetting when one is expecting a call regarding a sick family members in the hospital or expecting an important call of ANY type. This kind of situation contributed to one of my 70+ year old cousins' emotional breakdown & physical complications such as anxiety and stress disorders. 4. HOW DO these numbers get into the hands of the people making the calls? Thank you for your time. I hope I have been of assistance in addressing the issue.

I'm getting car warranty calls from little towns in ME like Cherryfield, Jackman, etc. I've had my current number for over 8 years and I'm still getting calls from creditors (6 different credit companies so far) looking for the previous owner! They used to use out of state numbers but are now using local numbers. I block the number (through Spectrum call block) and within a week or two they are calling back on a new 207 number. PLEASE Stop giving Verizon 1000 numbers at a time? And someone needs to do an audit of the numbers they are giving out to make sure they are legitimate companies. I know there is nothing that you can do about the credit companies but you can stop Verizon from making money by contributing to spamming us! Thanks

They were mostly robot calls trying to scam me, sell me something or phish for my private information. If the PUC and Maine Legislature banned non-Maine residents and businesses from obtaining 207 area code phone numbers, and required Google and other phone-over-IP companies to terminate all non-Maine holders of 207 phone numbers, then we could provide thousands - or tens of thousands - of 207 area code phone numbers for Mainers. As long as Google and other IP phone providers are allowed to sell Maine 207 phone numbers to non-Mainers, Maine population will be deprived proper use of our single area code and subjected to out-of-state spammers and scammers. As such, I almost never answer phone calls from any 207 area code number unless I am expecting a phone call or recognize the entire number. This type of behavior by spammers, and my response by refusing to answer their calls, deprives legitimate local Maine businesses from using the phone as a means to advertise and recruit new customers because most people don't answer phone calls they don't recognize the number for anymore.
