Against the proposed increase. Summit should not burden their existing customers with an enormous increase which is out of line with the fuel costs of other natural gas providers, especially due to their own shortcomings. If the increase is granted, properties serviced by Summit will become undesirable.

We do not think the rate increases should be approved by the PUC. We as Summit Natural Gas customers are already paying significantly more than customers of the other gas utilities. On top of that, a 30% increase and a potential for 15% annually thereafter is unreasonable and unsupported. Summit needs to address its internal issues instead of covering for them with increases. I respectfully request that the rate increase be rejected.

I am writing to oppose the rate increase for consumers, requested by Summit Natural Gas. I thought it might be helpful if the commission had some data from a current, household customer. For additional information, we only have a natural gas furnace which also heats our water. There is a small ReddyHeater in our kitchen that the natural supplies. And we burn ~4 cords of wood a year. During the coldest stretch this past winter, our billing cycle was 01/12/22 - 02/10/22, our total bill was $368.61. This was the result of Total Therms used of 193.04097. Summit uses this value to determine the total distribution charge. For that bill, the total distribution charge was 190.15. With the rate increase requested, during a similar future billing cycle will see our bill go to 374.31 the first year, reaching 392.62 by year 7. Assuming the service and facility charge and the commodity charge stay the same. A $30 different in one month probably doesn't seem like much, especially since I choose the most energy demanding time of the year. However, rate increases don't exist in a vacuum. I would assume that many of my neighbors are also experiencing, as we are, increased costs for the basic needs. And unlike grocery deals, we can't shop around for a better natural gas price. I've included the spreadsheet I've been keeping of our natural gas bills for the last year.

When Summit came knocking on our door a few years ago with the hard sell to switch to Natural Gas, a big benefit they pushed was the savings of gas over oil. With the extreme increases happening now, and planned in the near future, it makes me wish I hadn't gone to all the trouble (and significant investment!) to make the switch. We already keep our home at about 58 to 65 degrees in the winter just to save on our Summit bills. We have a new baby (our third child) on the way in December, and it is frustrating to even have to worry about how warm we should keep our house with these major increases being planned. Please reconsider their proposed rates, the costs to families in Maine are already so high.

To whom it may concern, We moved to a new development- McKearney Village Phase II- in early 2020. When we decided to build our three generation house there, we were not given any alternative other than to connect to the Summit Gas network. We understand the necessary uncertainty which is part of any business model - being ourselves self employed and business owners - and the change in market conditions - having had a professional career in the past in commodity trading, including oil and gas, and more recently in renewable energy. This is business. One can not fathom why shareholders would be the ones collecting profits during the sunny days while customers would be left to cover losses in the rainy season. Adjustments are understandable in exceptional circumstances and with market backed justification as granted by a recent Maine PUC decision. However, we do not understand why we, individual clients, should be forced to cover the costs of past errors and miscalculations from Summit Gas, and being asked to foot the bill by the Maine PUC which by definition is supposed to defend the common interests of Mainers. We have not heard of any instance where other private businesses, with a parent company publicizing substantial profits, would ask the referee to move the goal posts in the middle of a game to ensure a better outcome despite the poor performance of its team. This would look to us as a misappropriation of the Maine PUC mandate and could surely raise questions about the motivation of such a decision and could have long term consequences in terms of its image as an independent entity deemed to be free of outside influence. Kind regards, Bernard Hidier & Tanuja Desai Hidier

I have been a customer of Summit Natural Gas since January 2018 and oppose Summit's request for this unprecedented rate increase. The Maine PUC must protect Summit's customers from exploited and being required to bear the costs of the utility's poor business decisions. Summit must not be allowed to impose these unprecedented rate increases on its current customers. The Maine PUC should send a message to Summit - you cannot burden your customers by substantially increasing rates which are already the highest in Maine by a significant margin - I implore you to decide there shall be 'no rate increase'. The proposed increase should be rejected. Keeping Summit solvent should not fall on the backs of its current customers who already pay the highest natural gas rates in Maine. Additionally, the increase would adversely affect school budgets, and therefore, all residents in the community. An increase of this magnitude is outrageous by any standard. Since heating one's home in Maine is a necessity, it's also unconscionable.

Heating homes during a Maine winter and having a hot shower should not be a luxury. We ask that Maine Utilities Commission protect the interest of Cumberland County residents and ensure affordable and equitable pricing for natural gas and deny Summit Natural Gas's suggested price hike of 300%. Summit Natural Gas customers already pay the highest natural gas rates in Maine. The proposed hike would mean the average bill could be more than 300% above current rates of the other natural gas utilities in Maine. Natural Gas is an essential and regulated utility, required for Maine families and elderly residents to cook their meals, heat their homes and water. This proposed 300% price hike by Summit Natural Gas would make heating homes during winter unaffordable for many residents of Cumberland county and this will have significant health and financial implications on Maine communities and businesses.
